Matthew Paul Turner
Provocative Faith
Revell Books

TurnerProvocative Faith is an amazing book that answers so many of the questions that were left unanswered in Turner’s first book, The Christian Culture Survival Guide. I just felt through out this book Turner was much more honest and open, particularly about his own struggles. That openness gave me something more to reflect on than just putting down the church in general. Turner thoroughly sums up the book in one statement within the introduction, “The average follower of God lets obstacles get in the way of wholeheartedly embracing a complete faith in Jesus” (p. 17).

From chapter to chapter, through stories, personal interviews, honest and humble opinions, Turner presents a clear picture of what it means to struggle with faith and how to overcome those obstacles. In some ways, the book reminds me of being tired and weary, seeking God, but on my own terms and by my own power, instead of relying on God to get me through the challenges of life and living a “provocative” faith.

The big question is what Matthew means by living a “provocative” faith. I don’t want to be a complete spoiler, but it is a response to the Gospel that is outside of your comfort zone. A faith that is at times frightening, as Matthew writes, but also fully rewarding. In the Apostle John’s first letter to early believers, John writes about the intended greatness which the Gospel brings; assurance, fellowship, joy, and the challenge to proclaim the love of Jesus (1 John 1:1-4). I truly believe that this is where Provocative Faith connects, and why it is such an amazing book.
