Jonathan Cain – Unsung Noel

“Unsung Noel” is much larger than your standard holiday project. It is more of a concept album than a celebratory Christmas album. The songs primarily focus on Jesus the “savior” and less about celebrating and frolicking around in a one horse sleigh. It’s not that the typical Christmas album with it’s glee and jolliness are completely wrong, but it is refreshing to have songs that are more hymn-like lyrically.

The album is nearly an hour long and 14 tracks long. It does include some more common Christmas favorites as well. Like “Do You Hear What I Hear” and “Angels We Have Heard On High” (slightly modified). There is also a very nice version of “O Holy Night.”

My favorites are the worshipful “You Came to Reign,” the expressively meaningful “It’s Only Christmas When” and the lead track “This is the Heart of Christmas.”
