Lifest Journal Day Two 11 July 2003 Day two starts off with a broken awning on the camper, due to the strong winds. On the brighter side, the sun is out! It's still a bit windy and chilly for July but it's much better than day one. This day starts out slow as I spent most of the morning hanging around the press room waiting for artists to pop in for interviews. Due to more "detours and delays" many of the artists scheduled to be in the media room are no shows. The first act of the day that I attended was Spikefoot Tragedy, a female fronted hard rock band. I made a mental note to seek these people out after their show. After a few songs I returned to the media room where I listened in on an interview with former CCM Magazine Editor Matthew Turner. Matt announced that as of yesterday he was let go as editor of CCM Magazine. Talk about detours and delays! Matt appeared to be in ok spirits considering the severity of the news. It was now 4:30pm and I've hardly been out to the concerts so I figured it was time to get some pictures and listen in on a few acts. I started out with Lampa who was performing on the Grandstand. After a few songs I moved on to see Strange Celebrity, a new band on Squint Records. There was a hint of Stone Temple Pilots/Nirvana grunge in what I was hearing. After rockin' out with Strange Celebrity I moved on to Ray Boltz who was playing on the Main Contemporary stage. This was by far the largest audience I've seen in one place all day. Probably because there was so few places for the adults to get away from the hard rock and punk that was prevalent everywhere else. I spent a brief moment listening to Ray Boltz and then I headed back to The Pit to catch Daniel's Window. I recently saw Daniel's Window in a Jr. High setting and I believe today's show was a bit harder, but just as worshipful. On stage at the same time as Daniel's Window was The Rock & Roll Worship Circus (RRWC). So I had to split my time between the two. The RRWC was scheduled to play earlier but they were not able to make it and they had to be moved to a different time and a smaller stage. Gabriel, the Circus' lead vocalists, said something that was becoming more and more common at Lifest, "Have you ever had one of those days?" But nothing could stop them from playing on as they opened with "Open the Gates," and a few songs later closed with my favorite "Undiscovered." After all this, I tried to scramble over to the Contemporary stage to catch the end of Randy Travis' set. I got there just in time to hear his last song, and to watch the first ever Lifest engagement proposal! You know I don't think they ever gave the supposed bride-to-be the microphone. So I don't know if she said yes, but by the smile on the young mans face I would guess that she did. I stopped at the camper to take a little break before going to see Temper Tantrum. While on the way to their stage I ran into Daniel's Window at their booth packing up. The band was getting ready to drive back to Chicago, get some rest, and then head out to Pennsylvania. I was enjoying my time chatting with them so I helped them pack their merchandise. I made it to the Temper Tantrum set just after they started and stayed for a few songs. They played an interesting rendition of "My Boyfriends Back," and an original of theirs called "Drummer Girl." The last act for the night (for me anyway) was Third Day at the Grandstand. Third Day sang a similar set as they did on the Come Together and Worship Tour, which was a gentle mix of Worship and Rock. Thus ends day two at Lifest, another long but interesting day. |
