Who Are We?

Sara Groves and Joel Hanson
Cup O Joy Coffeehouse
Green Bay, WI
April 23 2004
by Rob Snyder

It's early in the year but this may go down in my book as the show of the year. With both of these performers sharing the same stage, you almost had a Christian "super group."

GrovesSara was more than willing to share the spotlight as she said Joel is writing "some of the best music of his life." Sara also paid tribute to Joel's former band PFR, calling PFR a "revelation" to herself and her husband when the two of them were in college in Springfield, MO.

The show opened with Sara's current single "All Right Here." Joel then performed "Missing Love" from PFR's "Disappear" CD, and then taught the audience a sing-along chorus to the worship song "Glory Glory." Joel is an excellent lead guitarist and accompanied Sara throughout the evening. The two later teamed up for their duet "Traveling Light," which is a highlight on the compilation of the same name as well as the recently released Absolute Worship CD.

Just as moving as the outstanding music was both artists' witnessing and personal testimony. Joel talked about how he didn't come to Jesus until the 10th grade and how over the last 20 years he has struggled to conquer "seeking after self." I heard Joel loud and clear.Hanson

Sara gave a powerful and moving statement of her very real "faith shakedown" over the last three years. She had always been serious about her faith until the birth of her first son. She told the captivated audience her heart hardened as she wanted assurance from God that her son would be safe. She was feeling "intense paranoia" as she baby proofed her home, to the point where, after watching a TV show that pointed out a person could drown in six inches of water, she wanted the water removed from her house. I think she was actually half-serious about that.

She searched her Bible at length but could not find the statement "good things will always happen to you." This led to, as Sara described it, her "healthiest conversations" with God. Every question she brought to God, God brought her answers that led to inner peace. She knows that safety is an illusion and we need to be passionate about Christ, that if we practice gratitude then joy will follow. This is powerful truth.

SaraBefore launching into her song "Esther" from her current CD, Sara also made a passionate plea for World Vision. Jesus tells us that "what you do for the least of these you do for me." After listening about the current AIDS crisis in Africa, the performance of "Esther" brought tears to many eyes in the audience.

This was an evening I will not forget. Both artists will be doing some solo performances throughout the summer. Go.
