Who Are We?

Maybe This Time
Broomtree
Rustproof Records

With the release of their third album, Broomtree continues to put out high energy rock, heavy on guitars and strong vocals. Admittedly, the vocals of Kylie Schilg draws much of the listeners attention, comparable to Tiffany Arbuckle of Plumb and Jenny Gullen of Hoi Polloi. However, Schilg is backed up with individually talented and enthusiastic friends Nathan Westbeld (guitar), Trevis Bick (drums), and Brett Bigbee (bass).

The common theme on Maybe This Time is faith and it's healing power. "Song Of Faith" speaks of God's undying love and never ending grace. "Reach Past" touches on the daily struggle of living a Christian life, reminding us that like the prodigal son God will always welcome us back and reach past our "self" to fill our hearts with love. My personal favorite, "Sunshine", praises God for being there when He is most needed reminding me of what Jesus said in Matthew 19:26 "...with God all things are possible."

Through the portholes of modern technology I was able to get a little more insight on the band. Read on to learn more about the title track and the people behind the band.

1. What is the origin of the band?

Broomtree began about four years ago. Kylie started the band with guys from high school and youth group praise band. The band went through some line up changes over the years and God ultimately brought the right people together at the right time.

2. Tell us a little bit about the name, "Broomtree."

Broomtree comes from a story in a chapter of the bible; I Kings 19. It is a story when Elijah is fleeing from Queen Jezebel, who wants to kill him. Elijah comes to a tree in the desert and pretty much tells God that he has had enough and wants to die. Elijah sits down under the tree and falls to sleep. God sends an Angel to Elijah that wakes him and tells him to eat and drink and then gives him the strength and tells him to go on.

We liked this name because at least one time or another, each of us has been under some type of "Broomtree" where we feel like giving up and part of life is just too big to deal with. It's about realizing that we don't have power in ourselves to go on when faced with these situations; only strength that God gives us when we surrender to Him can get us through.

3. Who are the bands influences?

Spiritually, we all can agree that our parents have been strong influences as we were growing up. All of us were in church at a young age and we were always encouraged by our families and our friends in the church to pursue what God had put on our hearts.

Musically, I think this is the most diverse band when it comes to each members personal taste... We all listen to so much music in general that I still think it's amazing that we come together and agree on our specific style. The new record I could say is defiantly influenced a little by the British Rock scene.

4. Can you explain the thoughts behind the title track, "Maybe This Time?"

"Maybe This Time" is actually one of the last songs written that went on the record. We decided that we wanted it to be the title track because the message is simple yet relevant. It deals with low self-esteem, comparing ourselves to what the world says is beautiful, when true beauty comes from the inside and the relationship we have with Jesus Christ. It talks about living our lives thinking that we are ok in our thinking, but when we are thinking like the world wants us to think, we begin living a lie. We were created for a relationship with Jesus Christ... given the breath of life so we could spend our lives bringing Glory to His name.

5. Tour Plans?

May and June we will be out to California then back towards the middle of July. We will be doing other summer shows around that and then looking for a tour in the fall.

6. Life outside of the band?

Nathan likes to golf and exercise and hang out with friends and family. Kylie likes to write, shop, travel, draw and paint, do something creative, and hang out with friends. Trevis likes to hang out with friends as well, he works a lot trying to make that big cash so Nathan and him can move to Nashville with Brett and Kylie soon! When we are together, we like to hang out in coffee shops... we love to eat... we eat too much... and then sit there and plot how we can get in shape... and then probably order dessert!
