Kaleidoscope Rachael Lampa should be commended for what she has done on her sophomore release "Kaleidoscope." The success of her debut and the amount of public exposure could have easily led this project to the softer side of Christian music. Where the lyrics are not so obvious and the focus is on the singers abilities, Rachael has definitely proven that she has an amazing gift when it comes to her vocal abilities, instead of the message. Songs like "Saviour Song" are contemporary enough to catch your attention and overall, it's just a fun song. At the same time the song gives praise to the Savior. "No Greater Love" expresses great adoration for God, and Rachael delivers the ballad beautifully, giving me goose bumps. "Sanctuary" is a step in a new direction from "Live For You" as it has more of a funky sound. This is, in part due to Rachael's musical influences which includes some "old school funk." The real key here is the collaboration of anointed lyrics and the method of delivery. While many companies or artists may wish to water things down to please a larger crowd, "Kaleidoscope" sticks to the edification of God's people. At the same time it delivers a pop flavor that will hook the listener. In regards to the writing, Rachael had a hand in some of it this time around. An interesting note are some of the other writers involved, like Paige Lewis, Natalie Larue, and Phillip Larue. Their influences and at times their voices can be heard in the songs . Paige sings back up on "Saviour Song" and she also helped to write the song. The most significant fact about this is that they are all peers and aimed at the same target audience. I don't want to forget to mention the veteran artist like Cindy Morgan and David Mullen. David's influences can best be heard in the "Sanctuary." All together "Kaleidoscope" is an amazing package. Rachael's gift of singing couldn't be used more properly. -Ken W. |
