Who Are We?

Gary

Gary Anglin and the Voices of Christian Cultural Center
Eagle Records

With its big-voiced choir, drums, guitar and horns, this CD is an excellent example of the modern Southern Gospel sound. Lyrically, most of the album's music tracks emphasize worship and praise music.

The songs "Hosanna" and the calypso-flavored "Hallelujah" will have you out of your seat. "Hallelujah" throws in bits of traditional hymns, including "Rock of Ages," "Hark the Herald Angels" and Handel's "Messiah." While that seems like an eclectic mix, the performers pull it off.

"Give Him All Praise," with its funky groove and bit of a rap, even includes a nod to Ike and Tina Turner.

Lead singer Gary Anglin has a deep, rich voice that is on display throughout the album. He shares a duet on the meditative "We Come to Worship" with Jodi Lamb, an excellent vocalist in her own right. Several other tracks, including "In the Beauty" and "Peace," feature a softer, urban R&B sound.

"With All My Heart," while sincere, stylistically seems out of place with its schmaltzy strings. One other complaint is that several Bible passages are read at various points on the album but there is no Bible references made available in the linear notes. For some inexplicable reason, a couple of songs do not have the lyrics printed either.

However, if you like the diversity of styles in contemporary Christian music, then this is a solid addition to your library.
