Who We Are Instead On other Jars albums that I've reviewed I have generally praised them for what they could do for others, but this time I'm excited about what this album does for me personally. Simple soulful melodies and striking lyrics that are thought provoking and easy to comprehend are the basis of this CD. More so, I hear a more Christ centered Jars than was apparent in the last few offerings. Drawing on influences like Johnny Cash, the band has reverted to a simpler acoustic soulful sound that helped launch them from the college dorms to concert arenas. It's difficult to pick a favorite or two from such a comprehensive collection but a few tracks stand out like "Jealous Kind," "Amazing Grace," and the peppy "Sunny Days." There is also a 70's remake of "Lonely People" (America). "Who We Are Instead" is a introspective album with a delightful acoustic sound, and simply the best release from Jars of Clay since "Much Afraid." - Ken W. |
