Supertones

O.C. Supertones
Revenge of the O.C. Supertones

Contemporary Christian music often gets knocked for not being very eclectic. However, The O.C. Supertones are not part of the problem. Their combination of driving horns and rock gives them a fairly unique sound in CCM. If you liked previous records from this group, you'll enjoy their seventh national release.

Don't be fooled by the brief straight-on rock open of the first track "Wake Me Up on Time," there are plenty of songs with a ska-feel. The band also stretches musically on a couple of tracks. "Shepard" and "Faith of a Child" are very subdued (for this group). "Prince of Peace" goes reggae on the chorus and "Dream of Two Cities" also has a reggae feel.

I really like how the band has included in the linear notes a brief explanation for each song. While I do not see references to Scripture, the band does not hide behind generic words.

"Where I Find You" has an almost ironic juxtaposition between the bouncy music and lyrics that point out we're all redeemed failures. "Everything's Broken" follows on a similar theme but it's told from Adam's (Genesis) point of view while the next track "The Kingdom" seems to be inspired by the last book in the Bible with a contemporary twist, "no more war, no more crime, no more unemployment line. And there is Christ upon His seat where mercy truth and justice meet."

"Cult of Cool" lets our youth know that belonging to Christ never goes out of style.

A great record for many different ages. If you get a chance to see this group live, go!
