Monk and Neagle Flicker Records 35:47 TRT
This is a pleasant self-titled debut from the Texas-based duo. Fans of the acoustic style of Bebo Norman should enjoy the record. Followers of the indy Christian music scene may recognize the name of Trent Monk who already has a couple of releases as a solo artist. Michael Neagle has a background of being a worship pastor.
The lyrics are sometimes on the generic side. “All I Need” includes the line “take my heart, my mind I want to leave everything behind. I'm nothing without you.” “Secret,” inspired by Colossians 1: 26-27, reveals that “You are the secret. How can I keep it to myself. From deep within me you are the mystery I love to tell.” Nothing real profound, but pleasant listening nonetheless.
Musically there are some interesting sounds. “You” is breezy and jazzy while “ Paradise ” has a contemporary jazz rhythm. “Lovely Woman” has a bluegrass influence.
The ten-track disk does include three love songs about the singers' wives. In their promo material, Monk explains that “Our wives realize that we are doing what God has called us to do and that, as married couples, they have a role in helping us fulfill that destiny. We made a commitment early on that if we were going to do this, we had to do it all together.”
