The Passion of the Christ: Songs At times the marketing behind “Christian” entertainment seems to get out of control, for example the Prayer of Jabez frenzy. Compared to Mel Gibson's movie The Passion of the Christ, the multi-faceted release of Jabez books, CD's, study guides is minor. All of the CD compilations spring boarding off of The Passion is a bit over whelming; not all bad, but a tad bit opportunistic. The latest release “The Passion of the Christ: Songs” (Lost Keyword Records) partnered through Wind-Up records and Provident Label group hit the shelves at the end of August. This new CD features 12 newly recorded songs inspired by the film. (A plus for this compilation.) Some of the highlights include a collaborative effort from Third Day, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Mercy Me called “I See Love.” You may have seen them performing this song live on the Jay Leno show during the Republican National Convention. Scott Stapp (formerly of Creed) appears solo with his debut of “Relearn Love,” and Kirk Franklin sings with Yolanda Adams on “How Many Lashes,” possibly the most representative song on the album. As I stated in the beginning, the over marketing of Jesus and his sufferings is hard to swallow. Particularly on this CD is the strong focus on Scott Stapp's beginning solo career. Aside from that, there is a balance of songs that can clearly be traced back to a moment in the movie; inspiring a visual recollection of a particular scene. - Ken W. |
