Mutemath

Reset EP

Teleprompt Records

Mutemath consists of Paul Meany and Darren King, both formerly of Earthsuit, and guitarist Greg Hill. Their new sound is rock based with electronic influences, and makes heavy use of sampling. The guys also like to use vintage instruments and amps from the 60's and 70's, combined with early 80's analog synthesizers.

The use of vintage equipment and experimental sounds and/textures gives Mutemath a very distinct sound that would probably lend itself to college radio more than mainstream or contemporary Christian radio. There are two instrumental tracks on the EP that serve as great examples of musical creativity - “Reset” and “Afterward”. It seems also that as you progress from beginning to end, the music gets more “progressive” with the use of synthesizers. “Plan B”, a more techno dance track speaks of restoration and hope. “Peculiar People” sounds the closest to what Earthsuit sounded like, but they add a mix of reggae to it.

This is a great CD if you're into the use of electronic sound manipulation and techno melodies. Personally, I like this CD because I am into the experimentation of using vintage equipment to make a deeper, richer sound that the usual studio polish. Within the lyrics, there is also a clear message of hope/and peace found in God. I'll be waiting anxiously for their first full release.
