DJ Maj
BoogiRoot
Gotee Records

BoogiRoot is a departure from DJ Maj’s usual mix-tape format into an emcee role, highlighting his personal writing skills. Guest appearances include Michael Tait, TobyMac, KJ52, Verbs, LA Symphony and more.

The name boogiroot itself is, according to DJ Maj, a play on words describing his particular spice that he ads to hip-hop. The nature of the album is very evangelical and the message is powerfully constructed. According to Tait’s intro, the album is rated “R”, for religious. The fun and games don’t lessen the message at all, but it does lighten up the CD enough to make the CD even more enjoyable – “it’s boogiroot Tina… gosh”.

A few other tracks I like are “Ballin’ Chains” a play on hip-hop terminology that addresses the drive for material things, “Love (So Beautiful),” “Can’t Take It Away”, featuring TobyMac, and “Gotta Go,” the CD closer that pays tribute to Maj’s wife.

This album was a real surprise to me. Maj has departed from his comfort zone switching from mixing to actually laying out his life for all to see and hear. BoogiRoot is a definite success for the future of this young Dj/Emcee.
