Sarah Brendel

Sarah Brendel
Self-titled
Inpop Records
10 tracks @ 37:34

This is an intriguing debut from an artist who’s difficult to pigeonhole. One of the things that makes this record interesting is that Sarah Brendel is from Germany. While Germany is the homeland of the current pope, it’s not exactly known as a country experiencing a revival.

Brendel is a powerful vocalist along the lines of Joy Williams, as heard on the songs “Pardon Me” and “Confused,” but stylistically Brendel is closer to Rebecca St. James.

I really liked the variety in her sound. In particular, “King I Love” demonstrates a nice 60s-pop sensibility, while many of the other tracks are rock and pop.

I’ve been bummed since Benjamin Gate broke up. Brendel may fill the gap.
Don’t be surprised when she receives a Dove nomination for “Best New Artist.”
