Broken Things

33rd Street Records

For those of you who are new to Christian music, myself included, Kim Hill is a name that has been around for a long time.  In 1991 her “Brave Heart” cd earned her a Grammy nomination, and for the past decade she has been leading worship for women’s conferences. Unfortunately, her world was shattered by a divorce, and the single mother of two is now laying her life out on “Broken Things.”

The new album also returns Kim to her folk-rock roots and the album successfully manipulates this format in a way that is timeless.  One favorite song is “Wide,” which Hill co-wrote with Margaret Becker.  It brings to mind a Biblical story of a broken woman who had a personal encounter with Jesus himself – the Samaritan woman (John 4).  The Samaritan woman was broken in a different way, but broken nonetheless.  And when she encountered Christ he ministered to her needs, but He called her out and asked her to face herself before he did so.  She faced her sin and confessed to the Lord and He picked up the broken things in her life.

“Broken Things” is an encounter with the hurt –pain – sin that is so common in all of our lives.  Like the PR materials say, this is not just for women, this is for all of us for no other reason than to know compassion and grace, as Christ displayed for us at the well.  I am personally grateful for Kim’s triumphant return.
