The Reckoning

Flicker Records

I don’t consider myself to be a rabid fan, or even an enthusiast; however, I could tell that there was something different about this album that set it apart.  After reading a few interviews, reviews, and their press materials it became clearer why the album sounded different.

Their media materials state it as a return to their roots and motivation.  What I would call it is just doing what you do best, and not trying to hard to impress others.  This time around it just sounds like their more interested in making great music and not whether or not it will cross-over or hit the charts.  I’m hearing more substance and heart

The opening moments of the CD grab you right away as Lester’s bass drum pounds in your ear.  From there it is a roller coaster ride of hard rocking tunes and some more laid back ballads.  The ballads pack a punch thanks to the depth of the lyrics and Beckley’s passionate vocals.  Both “Last Goodbye” and “Angel In Disguise” have haunting themes reflecting realities of today.  In our busy lives we can tend to put too much emphasis on work and achievements instead of family and friends.

Looking back I think that the band has clearly found a greater purpose and direction for their music.  The individual components of the album (sound/depth) make for their best project to date.
