            This might not be one of the year’s “best” records, but it is one of the most important records released this year.

            Mavis Staples is an original member of the Staples Singers.  On this solo effort, Mavis covers songs that were central to the Civil Rights movement.  I found the linear notes very informative.  The song “Down In Mississippi” will send chills down your spine.

            “99 and ½” is another powerful statement.  As Mavis says in the linear notes, “We’ve got to keep pushing to make the world a better place.  Things are better but we’re not where we need to be. . .99 and ½ just won’t do!”
