Jeff Johnson “Glorious Day” Independent Release 10 tracks @ 42:08 Grade - A-
According to his PR material, Jeff Johnson left a secure position in the corporate world to follow a dream that God had placed within him; to pursue Christ through music and to lead others to do the same. He has been to church camps, retreats, weekly Bible studies, festivals, and rallies and had an appearance on season four of American Idol in 2005.
Johnson says, “My deepest desire is that these songs would resound the immaculate beauty of our God—exalting Him and Him alone.” He succeeds.
I would make positive comparisons to the guitar-driven music of Chris Tomlin and Lincoln Brewster. This record has a nice mix of originals and covers.
Themes include the unexplainable mystery that while God is beyond us (“God Over Us,” “Ruin Me,” So High”), God is within reach, “Home.” The piano-driven “I’m Movin’ On” is a nice change of pace while “So High” has some very pretty backing vocals.
“The Old Rugged Cross” didn’t work for me. There was too much of a contrast between the traditional vocal arrangement and the contemporary instrumentation.
Overall, a very worthwhile record. Jeff and his band are based in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area.
