Avalon has gone through more changes than the Transformers. Only Janna Long remains from the original line-up.

The group’s ninth studio project covers a collection of contemporary Christian songs and introduces new member Jeremi Richardson. Richardson replaces original member Jody McBrayer, who had to step down due to health reasons.

As for this new project, Long says, “In an ever-changing world, the message of Christ has remained constant regardless of music’s evolving nature. I have no doubt this record will encourage a new audience as well as those that were blessed when the songs first released.”

Fittingly, the record opens with a Janna Long vocal on Twila Paris’ “God Is In Control.” This version is a pinch rocked-up and I liked the power vocals. The chorus on Steven Curtis Chapman’s “For the Sake of the Call” is just awesome.

I didn’t know this but SCC says that song was inspired by Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s book The Cost of Discipleship. “I’m so thankful and honored that Avalon would bring attention to this song for their new album,” SCC says.

“People Get Ready” is a dead-on cover that I really enjoyed. I also really liked the tracks “The Reason We Sing,” which I hope becomes a single, “Addictive Love” and the verses on Michael W. Smith’s “Place in This World.”

Janna Long recalls Avalon opening for Crystal Lewis when “People Get Ready” was a radio staple and Lewis was the GMA’s Female Vocalist of the year.

“It was amazing, having the chance to spend time with so many of these seasoned artists so early in our career,” Long says. “We are truly grateful to them for helping us to make Avalon what it is. We hope this record shows our gratitude.”

While I generally like Avalon’s music, sometimes their songs are a bit overproduced for my taste. Amy Grant’s “Thy Word” is too atmospheric while the Avalon style doesn’t work on 4Him’s “Basics of Life.”

The group has also redone their career song, “Testify to Love.” While I prefer the original, Long says, “No matter what happens in my life or where God leads, my prayer is always to testify to Him for He alone is worthy of all glory!” Amen.

The new lineup will be on tour this spring.

Mandy Parsons of Savvy Media Solutions did a bang-up job with the background material for this release.
