Sanctus Real
“We Need Each Other”
Sparrow Records
10 tracks @ 40:11
Grade = A

Sanctus Real has some staying power (hard to believe that their first concert was over 10 years ago) as the band returns with their fourth full-length CD. This record showcases a very mature sound, both lyrically and musically. I love their straight-ahead rock sound, simple yet effective.

About their new record, lead singer Matt Hammitt says, “There’s a longing for something bigger than oneself, a band, a song or a crowd of concertgoers. We need to come together as the body of Christ, unifying to see God’s work done through us. We can accomplish so much more if we stand together as one.”

That sentiment is reflected in the number one radio-hit title track and its lyric, “we need each other, through all the highs and lows.” I also like the uplifting chorus.

“Whatever You’re Doing” tells us that “I’m giving in to something heavenly,” while “Legacy” reflects upon the idea that “I’m so tired of wasting time.”

The band can handle a variety of styles. “Half Our Lives,” which features vocalist Katie Herzig, reminds me of The Birds while “Eternal” is very atmospheric. Based on the ubiquitous readers’ polls, I think drummer Mark Graalman is under-appreciated in Christian music. He really shines on “Lay Down.”

Thanks to Rick Hoganson of Hoganson Media Relations for the review disk and background material.
