Laura Story
Great God Who Saves
INO Records
Grade = B

Sometimes I am amazed at what little I actually know about Christian music and those who are behind some of the most loved of all worship songs. In this case that person is Laura Story. When her INO debut landed on my desk I was mildly impressed and wondered just how she got here (here being on a label).

It was a moment of “a-ha” when I read the biographical material and discovered that Laura Story had written “Indescribable,” a worship song that I had sung countless times during Sunday morning worship. Chris Tomlin later recorded “Indescribable” in his 2004 release of Arriving, giving the song a much wider audience and attention.

In the context of worship, Laura Story does an expletory job as a singer/songwriter. Laura has previously released two independent albums prior to the INO release of Great God Who Saves. The songs come deep from within her heart for God and the songs did not come easily. The story behind the title track is taken from a trying experience. It was written that shortly after signing with INO, Laura’s husband was hospitalized with a brain tumor. Through the process of treatment Laura and her husband, Martin, were stretched spiritually, but on the other side Laura had found that God had never let her slip from his loving grip.

The tone of the album is described as melodic, piano-driven worship. The music is wonderful and the words are encouraging. It is truly a wonderful project and I would encourage you to check out Laura’s MySpace page for more information and song samples. You should find “Mighty To Save” as the lead track on MySpace and this really sums it up well for her life story.
