Pillar
For theLove of the Game
Flicker Records

Wailing vocals, waning and waxing melodies, driving guitars, and powerful drums drive Pillar’s latest release, For the Love of the Game. The new record should win over listeners, especially rockers, with its sincerity. The music is raw, never overproduced, and the lyrics are real and heartfelt. The album plays the double role of an anthem for those passionate about their faith, and also a wake-up a call to those complacent and lost in lethargy. Turn it Up, a unique track—with every line of the lyrics coming from the title of a Christian Song, (Beauty from Pain by Superchic[k], Define the Great Line by Underoath, etc.)—isPillar’s tribute to Christian music. Smiling Down gives listeners a break from the intensity, and offers a smooth, uplifting ballad for those going through rough times.

Musically, Pillar has outdone themselves. “For the Love of the Game” is by far the band’s most mature album in all instruments and facets of the album. Though more mature, Pillar has retained their catchy, easy-to-shout-along style that makes them such a great band to see live.

Overall, the new record has few glaring weaknesses, though it does get somewhat repetitive in the last few songs. The album art is a bit overdone, and came out a bit cheesy and obviously photo shopped. The lyrics are as powerful as ever and written better than ever. For the Love of the Game is a challenging and encouraging message to all Christ-Followers, and I would recommend it to anyone.
