Derek Webb
“How to Kill and Be Killed”
Inpop Records

This live concert, recorded at Rocketown in Nashville, is suitable only for the hardcore fan who absolutely has to have everything this artist has done.

The amateurish production values mar the entire show. Shaky and out-of focus camera shots are only the beginning. I liked Webb’s previous solo project, “I See Things Upside Down,” however, this video looks like a bad home-movie.

No director is listed in the credits so I’m assuming that this was shot on separate cameras and edited together with some computer-based software. An on-site director was sorely needed. For example, as much as I like the song “Ballad in Red,” I could only stand watching a couple of minutes of this performance of it.

The performances are ok as many of the musicians on “I See Things Upside Down” are on stage here but Webb doesn’t do much between the songs other than the perfunctory “How’s everybody doing?” and “Thank you.”

Even the bonus interview is hard to watch as there are absolutely no production values beyond a single, unchanging camera shot and the occasional segment title graphic. The audio is horrible as Webb is recorded off-mic.
